چکیده

**Address: Avenida Rodrigues Alves 875, 59020-100 Natal RN , Brasil. Forty patients presenting trigeminal neuralgia underwent Gasserian ganglion and trigeminal roots compression with Fogarty’s balloon are presented. The natural history, the clinical presentation and the demographic aspects of the patients were similar to that described in the literature. Fifty procedures were performed; 30 patients underwent one compression and nine, two. In one patient the procedure was bilateral. The follow-up ranged from six to 48 months. One compression was effective in 37 (90.26%) hemifaces and the second procedure alleviated pain in nine (100%) patients. There were only minor immediate and late complication rates. Recurrence of pain occurred in six (15%) patients during the 48 months follow-up period; four, during the first 24 months; one, at the 36th month, and the remainder at the 42nd month. Two (5%) patients did not present relief of pain and underwent a second procedure during the first 24 hours after the first one and had total pain relief. Two (5%) other patients presented partial pain relief; one did not agree with the second procedure and the other was operated six months after the first surgery. COMPRESSION OF GASSERIAN GANGLION AND TRIGEMINAL ROOT WITH BALLOON IN THE TREATMENT OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA: PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF 40 PATIENTS (ABSTRACT)*. THESIS. SÃO PAULO, 2000.

Percutaneous Balloon Compression of Gasserian Ganglion for the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia: an Experience from India.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is characterized by unilateral, lancinating, paroxysmal pain in the dermatomal distribution area of trigeminal nerve. Percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) of Gasserian ganglion is an effective, comparatively cheaper and simple therapeutic modality for treatment of TN. Compression secondary to PBC selectively injures the large myelinated A-alfa (afferent) fibers that ...

Trigeminal neuralgia in a patient with a dural arteriovenous fistula in Meckel's cave: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE Trigeminal neuralgia is often the result of vascular compression at the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve. We report a case of trigeminal neuralgia in a patient with a dural arteriovenous fistula in Meckel's cave. Endovascular closure of the fistula resulted in elimination of the patient's pain at the gasserian ganglion level. CLINICAL PRESENTATION A 77-year-old...

Background and purpose: Trigeminal neuralgia is the most common type of facial neuralgia. The pain would easily affect the quality of life according to its acute and severe nature. Treatment modalities include pharmacotherapy, microvascular decompression, and lesioning peripheral procedures targeting the trigeminal ganglion. These methods either have side effects or are partially invasive; t...

Percutaneous balloon compression for trigeminal neuralgias and autonomic cephalalgia.

OBJECTIVE This prospective study aimed to evaluate the results of percutaneous trigeminal ganglion balloon compression (BC) in patients with various types of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and autonomic cephalalgia. METHODS Twenty-five consecutive patients underwent BC and were followed up for 27-60 months. They were divided into 2 groups: group A (n=18) patients with idiopathic TN and group B (n=...

Trigeminal Neuralgia: Role and Neurosurgical Indications of Peripheral Alcohol Injections, Controlled Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation, Gasserian Ganglion Compression with Balloon and Microvascular Decompression in Posterior Cranial Fossa. Experience in 437 Patients

Because of the lack of an unique therapeutic approach effective at the same way for all the patients affected from trigeminal neuralgia, many therapies are accomplishable, from pharmacological ones [2-4] to minor or major surgical procedures [5-12]; recently, radiosurgical therapies have an important role, too [13-17]. Pharmacological therapies should be the first therapeutic approach. In the s...
